How to Choose the Right Monitors?
Monitors come on the market with various features and different specs which makes it harder for buyers to make the right kind of investment. For instance, what kind of resolution should you buy 4K, 1440p, 1080, or plain HD? Are features like flicker-free, low blue light mode, G-synch, and Free-Synch important enough for giving consideration? How much refresh rate should be there for meeting our objectives? These features and many others deserve your attention as they can make a very big impact. We are going to discuss some important things that you should look for in a monitor that you want to buy.
Screen Size of Monitors:
Screen size is the first thing you will look at before purchasing a monitor. Screen size should be decided as per the intended use whether it is for general purposes or specialized tasks like video editing, graphic designing, and the like. Measured diagonally like other electronic devices, monitors can be as large as 80 inches, but the average size falls between 23 to 43 inches. There are also Ultra Wide monitors which occupy way more space horizontally as they have a 21:9 aspect ratio, therefore, measurement of space should be undertaken first before finalizing the screen size. If you are looking for carrying out specialized tasks like video gaming, 3D designing, Video & Image editing, or even watching movies, Ultra Wide monitors should be given serious consideration, if you can afford a steep price. Otherwise, 23-inch screen size is suggested for budget-conscious buyers, and 27-inch monitors are considered the best for midrange display solutions.
Video Inputs or Video Connectors:
Video connectors or video inputs are the most important ports on monitors. If you want to view content on monitors, you will need to plug a video cable from a desktop or laptop into monitors. Currently, there are four types of video connectors:
- VGA (Video Graphic Array) Connectors:
This is an earlier form of video connector which is considered a legacy. You will need it only when you want to connect older display devices. Additionally, this is an analog signal and should be used as a last resort.
- DVI (Digital Video Interface) Connectors:
This video connector is also fast becoming obsolete, but it does support as much resolution as first-generation HDMI does. DVI can support 1920×1200 resolution with a maximum refresh rate of 144 Hz provided with the right kind of monitor. This video input also warrants a separate audio cable to get audio signals from PCs which is certainly a great nuisance for the users.
- HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) Connectors:
This is a standard video input connector that is used to connect high-definition TVs and monitors. There is a built-in speaker which means you don’t need to install separate audio for carrying audio from PCs or desktops. The latest standard of HDMI, HDMI 2.1, is capable of supporting up to 8K resolution which is more than enough for performing highly-specialized tasks. Usually, HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 1.4 with frames of 50 and 24 per minute respectively is enough for high-skilled tasks because both can support 4K resolution.
- DisplayPort Connectors:
DisplayPort is the best available option for connecting your PCs and desktops with monitors. They also have the ability to carry audio signals with a built-in sound system and their latest version DisplayPort 2.1 has everything you need for professional tasks. DisplayPort 1.4 or higher versions are suggested here because they can support 8K video and nearly all audio formats, thereby, emerging as one of the best choices for consumers.
Refresh Rate:
The refresh rate indicates the number of times per second the display can update with new images. It is measured in Hertz or Hz. Refresh rate determines the smoothness of the screen when scrolling down or up the web pages or viewing the video. The higher the refresh rate, the smoother the images when they are in motion. A minimum 60 Hz refresh rate is required for having a smoother experience of viewing images or videos on display, most of the monitors support a 60 Hz refresh rate. If you are looking for a monitor for non-gaming usage, a refresh rate of 75Hz would be a fine one, but for gaming and other professional tasks like high-frame video editing or viewing, you can go for monitors having a higher refresh rate but should not go beyond 144 Hz. Refresh rates above 144 Hz are definitely more smooth, but these are luxury, not a must-have requirement for performing professional tasks.
Resolution:
There are three resolutions that deserve your serious consideration: 1080p, 1440p, and 4K. 1080p is the least expensive resolution but it is suitable for 24-inch monitors and it can support a majority of software as well. 1440p is a midrange resolution and it is most suitable for 27-inch and 32-inch monitors. 4K resolution is for larger-sized monitors, but if you are willing to purchase 4K resolution in 27-inch or 32-inch monitors, it would be a better experience. Having said that, 1080p resolution is enough for doing non-creative tasks, but if you are looking for performing creative tasks like 3D designing, high-definition video editing, and gaming, 1440p and 4K resolutions would help you create high-definition content with ease and razor sharpness.
Integrated Features:
Apart from the above-said considerations, buyers should also be advised to look for monitors having advanced features like a touchscreen interface, curved display, adjustable height, USB Hub built-in, built-in speakers, pictures in the picture, hardware vertical synch, and slots for the memory of SD cards.
